New Covers by Marjorie!

[Imported from Myspace]

Marjorie & I have been busy recording some covers and she’s put them up on her new profile at:

www.myspace.com/marjiesothersongs

Last weekend we recorded “I Need Love” by Sam Phillips, “Halfway To Paradise” by Goffin and King and “Broken Things” by Julie Miller.

Marjie handled lead vocals and acoustic guitar and I played lead guitar. Samuel Cardwell played bass and Chris Haylock was being his usual brilliant self on drums.

We recorded live in the home studio, including lead vocals. We didn’t have enough microphones for me to do backing vocals so we overdubbed them later along with some tambourine and handclaps.

We didn’t play more than three takes of any of the songs so Samuel and Chris did a fantastic job with very little to go on! Even I had never played “Halfway To Paradise” so I was pleased we managed to get it reasonably tight with no chord charts and only a couple of runs-through. Marjie’s been on a bit of a Nick Lowe kick lately and that’s where she picked up that song.

There are also some other acoustic songs we recorded a few weeks ago.

So check out me as a sideman and while you’re there add Marjorie as a friend and say hi to her!

Let’s face it, there are too many great artists, writers and producers to list but I especially like to listen to a lot of soul music including music from the Stax and Atlantic labels, Motown, 70s soul, doo-wop, be-bop, early rock and roll, ska, reggae and New Orleans R&B. Listen to my favourite radio program, Mohair Slim ‘s “Blue Juice” on Melbourne’s PBS 106.7 FM (www.pbsfm.org.au) and you’ll get a pretty good idea!
