Playing bass with jazz great and former Motown arranger Gil Askey!

[Imported from MySpace, updated Sept 2012]

Below are some videos of our son Samuel Cardwell and me playing guitar and bass respectively for a youth swing band led by the great Gil Askey, who now lives near us in Australia, but, believe it or not, played with artists like Billie Holiday, Miles Davis and Count Basie back in the 40s and 50s!

And, as if that wasn’t enough claim to fame, he was one of the Motown house arrangers throughout the 60s, working with The Supremes, The Four Tops, The Temptations and many other legendary artists! He then went on to be Diana Ross‘s musical director through the 70s and beyond. He produced and arranged the soundtrack to Lady Sings The Blues and was nominated for an Oscar in 1972. A new CD of a session he did with Diana Ross from around the same time has recently been released. It’s called “Blue” and it’s well worth picking up.

Gil also was musical director for the legendary Motown 25th Anniversary Concert at which Michael Jackson first did his signature moonwalk while singing “Billie Jean“, arguably the most pivotal and iconic moment of his career!

And now [2007] he’s 82 years old and he still has twice my energy. He plays at the Mentone Hotel here in Melbourne just about every Sunday afternoon and, well, there’s not really anything better in the whole world.

Cheers – DC

[ADDENDUM: Sadly, Gil died of lymphoma in Melbourne on 9th April 2014]
